The first generation of Toyota IST was released in 2002 as a new type 2-BOX car. The main target of IST was young people, and the concept was “Toyota IST for your 1st” to provide “the greatest compact car for mobility life.”
It is based on the Toyota Vitz model, but it is more spacious than the Vitz, it is a flawless blend of wagon-like spaciousness and an SUV-like stylized exterior due to its dynamic dimensions and raised chassis. The vehicle competes with Honda Fit.
The characteristic of Toyota IST was its style. IST adopts a wide front grille, wheel arches that protrude at the four corners, and large 15‐inch tires. These features intergrade the sense of activity and high quality of SUVs.
The interior of IST is simple and dynamic, which is achieved by combining the horizontal/vertical basic configuration with the rounding of front and rear parts.
Toyota IST has engine types of 1.5 litres, and 1.3 litre in-line 4‐cylinder DOHC BEAMS engines with the combination of 4‐speed AT called the Super ECT.
The vehicle is also equipped with various safety equipment such as dual SRS airbag, ABS, brake assist function etc. Discharge headlamps are adopted as standard equipment for certain grades to increase nighttime visibility.
